Shirahama is a large pure white beach south of Osaka. It takes 2 to 3 hours by the JR West Kuroshio Limited Express train from Osaka or Kyoto. Also at Shirahama is a large fish market with an eating area where you can buy fresh fish and eat it on the spot.
There are many other attractions along the beautiful coast, including Engetsu Island and the Sandanbeki ocean cave, nearly 120 feet down, reached by an elevator. From the 8th to the 12th century the caves were used by pirates as a hiding place.
