June 26, 2011 marked the 100th Anniversary of Chief Campbell's death.
There was a parade from Fire Headquarters to the ceremony held at the Campbell Memorial at W. Burnside St. and SW 18th Ave.
David Campbell was killed at 8:35am on June 26, 1911 in an explosion while he was fighting a fire at the Union Oil Company plant at East Water and East Salmon streets.
Chief Campbell, only 47 years old, was a progressive leader and a force behind the modernization of Portland’s fire department. Well respected by his men and the public alike, his funeral procession drew over 150,000 mourners.
