In railfan circles, Wassen is famous for the two loop tunnels used to gain elevation as trains climb toward the Gotthard tunnel that goes under the Alps toward Italy. Wassen is a beutiful and interesting place, but when you are in the town it is difficult to visualize how it all works. Looking at the map and these photos may make it more clear. The photos were taken standing over the upper loop tunnel (bottom of the map).
